The very original jazz pianist performs music filled with thoughtful and insightful improvisations. Secrets of a Kiri Tree, Antonio Flinta’s very first solo piano album, puts the focus on his impressive playing as he interprets his own compositions and creates fresh versions of four pieces from other sources.
Three originals, two standards, and a song apiece by Paco de Lucía and Violeta Parra, make this a rewarding recording that is relaxed, subtle, and quietly inventive.
The pianist’s three originals include We met once, Be at one with this world and Yone y Elena. On these performances, he displays the ability to build up his improvisations gradually, taking them to some unexpected places along the way.
Paco de Lucía’s Canción de Amor finds him thinking aloud at the piano in a moody, mysterious, and passionate performance. I Hear a Rhapsody is taken at a surprisingly slow tempo that brings out its hidden beauty. Flinta caresses the melody of Violeta Parra’s Gracias a la Vida, and he concludes this enjoyable and thought-provoking set with a rendition of ‘Round Midnight that is quite fresh and original.
