In “Poetry as Insurgent Art”, Lawrence Ferlinghetti reminds us that everything is poetry, that we have to rebel and that, when we dream, imagine something or desire it with all our hearts, we are actually making the world a better place. Art is an Insurgent Poem is a song that works around a centre, a point that binds it all together and a thank you to Ferlinghetti.
“24 Preludes for a Fugue” is a beautiful documentary about the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. He is the one who makes the documentary so fantastic. When he describes something, you feel as though the universe itself is talking. The Perception Of What’s Coming is like a circle, or like several overlapping circles: the bass makes one circle and the melody another, and when they coincide three chords start in a cycle. All this is dedicated to the magic of Arvo Pärt’s music and words.
Say So is constructed on four phrases. Three of them are rhythmic – the first like a bouncing ball, the second has three descending notes and the third has two rising – while only one is melodic. Apart from that, there is no form, structure or tonal centre, just a regular tempo, a medium up; a 4/4 and the interplay of the four of us.
Songs sometimes come about almost on their own, unexpectedly, one afternoon… For me, the melody of Como en Sueño is like a line, a thread that turns gently, taking you from one side to the other and generating chords, sounds and colours.
György Ligeti is one of the greatest composers of the second half of the 20th century. Either with two notes (or even only one!) or with a mass of sounds, he can make you smile or transport you to another world. Ligeti In The Background is divided into two parts: in the first part there’s space, the space of chords; in the second there is the propulsive rhythm of a 7/4 and the sax solo. Ligeti has a piece entitled “Self-Portrait with Reich and Riley (and Chopin in the background)”. We have him.
Inscape #2 is a piano and sax duet. The melody and the bass are two different 12 tone sets (all twelve notes appear only once). After that, we never know what will happen next or where we’ll end up, and we really like it that way. Dedicated to my brother Yngve.
